Planning & Development
One of the primary functions of the WARC is to assist the region's counties and municipalities with obtaining funds for projects that stimulate economic development in the region and improve the area's quality of life. The majority of these activities are coordinated with the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
Staff prepare grant applications for member governments and administer projects funded by the Economic Development Administration, Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grants, Appalachian Regional Commission, Delta Regional Authority, Department of Interior's Land and Water Conservation Funds, State Economic Development funds, and other sources.
In addition to individual county and municipal projects, the commission participates in statewide projects on a regional level. For example, WARC has prepared plans and reports on rural water systems, community sewage systems, solid waste management, rural roads and bridges and Regional Hazard Mitigation in West Alabama.
